This paper focuses on the failure management and prevention strategies
for drinking water systems. All drinking water systems are subject, to a greater or
lesser degree, to hazards. In reality, it is impossible to make any structure perfectly
immune from failure. This paper provides a brief overview of the concept of
a linguistic variable for the identification and designation weak and critical elements
of drinking water systems. Signification of Scenarios are alternative descriptions of
how the future might unfold. A key principle of water policy, is that pollution should
be dealt with as close to the point of origin as possible (catchment protection).
