Abstract

The article “Key geopolitical trends 2020-2035” is based on the analysis of 44
forecasting studies, published in the past few years by research centres and state organizations
in Europe and the United States. The studies have identified the most significant geopolitical,
economic and social trends that will shape global affairs in the next 15 to 20 years. These
include the complex formation of a new multipolar world and the search for a new balance of
power, as the global hegemony of the United States weakens and the new global power, China,
builds up its economic, political and military strength. This process will take place against the
backdrop of continuing economic globalization, which tends to magnify the impact of financial,
economic and social crises, competition for access to resources and the increasing intensity of
many traditional and new security threats that have immediate impact on European stability
(escalation of conflicts or security tension in some regions, migration waves, pandemics,
organized crime, terrorism). All this will test the viability and response capacity of two key
organizations whose membership includes the Czech Republic – the EU and NATO. The future
will also see heightened competition in science and research, which are becoming increasingly
crucial for state security and economic prosperity. The last part of the article lists the key
trends that will shape global development in 2020-2035.
