Oil accidents are extraordinary situations accompanied by release of oil products,
such as various types of gasoline, petroleum, diesel, grease, etc. From the point of view of the
Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic, these interventions are very frequent events. The
problem of leakage of contaminants to the environment and the elimination of their
consequences is a multi-critical discipline, when one of the most important tasks associated
with detecting culprit of the accident is the identification of the leaked substance. As a large
part of the accidents is represented by release of petroleum substances in water, the following
methods are used in the chemical laboratories of the Fire Rescue Service regions: UV
spectrometry, FTIR spectrometry, Raman spectrometry, gas chromatography with mass
detector.
