Abstract

Since 1960s, the concept of environmental security has slowly but
irreversibly influenced the agenda of security studies. Acceptance of environmental
issues in security studies is permanently contested from tradicionalists, who claim
that only military and political sectors matter. Some scholars on the other hand
regard environmental security as the principal issue of todays world. But it is
important to realize that this concept lacks transparent borders - meaning of
environmental security vary and each author brings his own definition. The aim of
this article is to compare clasical typology of security studies and various concepts
of environmental security in order to gain better understanding of the concept and
also to asses whether the typology is relevant.
