Simulation and training games organized during the courses for rescue
workers and the crisis management staffs are effective means for improving their
preparedness. They enable to intensively and safely train both individuals and
teams, and they are also less time-consuming and costly. Using simulation and
games also helps to focus the training not only on acquiring knowledge concerning
standardized procedures and experience from the rescue operations carried out in
the past, but also on developing creativity and flexibility in thinking of emergency
managers. The article analyses both individual and group learning during
simulations of crisis situations, and defines the principles of learning through
simulations and games and other training methods. The article informs about the
results of the security research project: Research and Application of Simulation
Technologies for the Preparation and Training of Members and Staff of the IRS
