Abstract

The authors’ prognostic scenario presents a warning prediction of
potential energy security crisis in Europe and the Czech Republic should the
Russian supply of gas to Europe (especially supply via Ukraine) be interrupted
again. This would be a challenge for the EU: the need to deal with energy security
issues in a truly coordinated way has already become a categorical imperative for
the Union. The authors see energy security in two aspects: first, as the need to
ensure the supply of energy resources, and, second, the need to protect them
during production and transport. The text also contains an outline of a blackout
scenario, i. e. looks at the consequences of possible power supply cuts in the
country. The final part of the study is dedicated to the global competition for
energy resources and to the concrete situation of the Czech Republic.
